Books / Looking for Alaska by John Green

"We think we are invincible because we are."

I have a slight obsession with boarding schools, even though my high school and university days are long over. So when I read that Miles was going to a boarding school, I was even more excited for this book. Miles was going to leave his 'minor life for grander maybes'. A great mindset if you ask me.

I started reading Looking for Alaska right after I'd read The Fault in Our Stars also by John Green. You could say that I was in a books-written-by-John-Green kind of flow. The story is about Miles who moves from Florida to Alabama to go to boarding school. There he meets the Colonel, Alaska, Takumi and Lara. Who learn him how it goes down at Culver Creek.

Like Miles says to himself 'I had imagined that the Creek would be a bit more exciting than it was-in reality there'd been more homework than adventure.' This kind of describes how I felt while I was reading this book. I thought the pace was quiet slow. It wasn't really exciting, scary or funny. I did keep reading though and I'm glad that I did. Sometimes you just have to read stories that are a little different from the things you normally read.

I liked how you could tell that Miles parents really loved and cared about him. Miles had some great lines as well. 'If only we could see the endless string of consequences that result from our smallest actions. But we can't know better until knowing better is useless.'
